A Game That Tells You Who You Are

At my university, I work for the career center. I learned that the faculty members were going to be having all career employees play an online game that supposedly determines who you are based on your choices. However, before the career center released the game to me, my friend ES found it online and suggested I play with her (I’m obsessed with personality quizzes, so she knew this game was right up my alley). I was very excited. While playing the game on my iPad, it was like I was witnessing things from my character’s perspective in first person. It was like I was IN the game. To start, ES and I were rowing in this canoe. The water was very smooth and calm, but it was very foggy and cloudy, so we couldn’t see what laid ahead. As we rod, we approached a large patch of land, like an island of grass. We brought our canoe onto the grass and walked to the center of the island. The sky began to clear and the sun came out, and it became obvious that the island was gorgeous. The grass below us was extremely green. We stood in a clearing, and, when were turned in a circle, our surroundings were different paths to choose from. There was a grassy trail surrounded by lush trees, a floral trail surrounded by cherry blossom trees, a dark trail, and more. I think a female voice told us to choose a path. At this point, we were still both very excited, and we just went with our gut feelings. I chose the grassy trail, and ES chose the floral trail. The trails were not very long. I could see the end of the trail as soon as I entered the path of trees. At the end was this white stand with a glowing light on top of it. I approached it and put my hand into the light. The game revealed my next challenge, which was to choose what my childhood self looked like. I was given a selection of choices in a projection, and I would use my hand to flip through them. I designed an avatar of what I looked like as a child, including my blonde hair. When I was finished, I was told the child would be joining me on my journey. Suddenly, the child I designed approach me from behind in an old-fashioned dress. She smiled at me. The game then told me to choose another companion to help me on my journey. I was given a selection of animals, children, and more. My gaze lingered on the image of a young and attractive man. Something about him was mysterious. He was dressed in all black. I chose him on instinct, not wanting to overthink any of my choices. He appeared like the child, and he offered to help me moving forward. At this point, I remember ES and I had beat the first level. We decided to take a break from the game. I remember talking to other employees of the career center and explaining how amazing the game was. For some reason, we were raking fallen leaves in this forest, and I was specifically encouraging IM to play the game. I felt the need to continue the game, even though my employers encouraged me to wait for them to catch up. They wanted to assign all players one level per week, but I was so eager to continue because it felt so real. While at home, I started playing again. I remember getting back into my canoe with my companions and rowing to the next challenge in another foggy sea. At the same time, my family members were interrupting me because I had to pack for some kind of trip we were taking. I couldn’t focus on the game because of this, so I stopped.
