Mermaid Dress

I was at a shopping center which looked like homes, was walking around doing some shopping. There was an old friend of mine from waking life who I noticed was there but I was trying to stay away from. This person kept following me around and staring at me everywhere I went. I then ended up heading home, it was late night. He begins walking up to me saying I shouldn't head home that late and that I should go with him.I don't know why but I ended up going with him, he took me to a place I never been before which he claims to be family's house and tells me to talk to his cousin, who I never met. His cousin was very nice, he knew nothing about me, was to himself and talked about a lot of things he likes and asked me what I liked. Then we left and as I was walking ahead of my friend he taps me to turn around and says he wanted to tell me something. He then says the house is mine, the family which lives there is family he hasn't seen in a long time, the dad is really sick so they're selling the house and that he said that he could use it so they gave it to my friend and my friend put it in my name. I couldn't believe what he had done and I had said"are you serious?" He said, "Yeah, so you can come here whenever you want." Weeks go by and there was one night I didn't want to go home. I was in the area and lived far from wherever I was so I decided to go to the house which he said was mine. I got there and it was really dark, looked abandoned. I opened the door and it wasn't locked, when I stepped in I closed the door, moments later I began hearing shuffling inside like someone was in there. I ran outside and to the fence and stared at the road contemplating if I should walk but it was dark so I turned around and layed on the grass and thought if something doesn't come out while I lay here then I'll go back in. I walk back in, closed the door behind me and see a man whos fairly tall. He looks at me and says "oh hi" I say "sorry, um, my friend said that I could stay here if I ever need." He said, "oh, ok. Yeah you can, I think I know what friend that is" I said, "yeah" He says, "Yea, no problem, and then he looked down" In that moment I had visions of the man and my friend having a connection, my friend was leaving him and going with his dad and the man being sad about it or having emotions towards the situation. I looked at the man and was going to ask him a question about what I was feeling or about how they were connected in terms of family, him and my friend but before I could say anything, the man looks over and says, "You know your friend, he's uh.. he's a good kid." I said, "oh yeah" He says,"I have a story about him and his life." I said, "really?" he says,"yeah, he uh, you know his dad." I said "yea" he said,"his dad used to uh, bully me in school and uh, I didn't know why, I had no idea why and when I had my son, he came up to me and told me that I shouldn't have had a child and then he proceeded to tell me that I should give him my child because if I were to raise him, he wouldn't come out the way that he should, so I did.. and it turns out, he was right. I realized all these years, after the fact, why he was always picking on me in school. I was upset about it before... I'm glad that he did and uh, I'm glad that he was able to provide something more for my son, well his son now, and uh.. that's your friend." I said"ok. I thought so cause I had a feeling and you look like him too." he says,"oh, I look like, your friend?" I said, "Yea, I was going to ask if you were his dad but then again I knew he had a dad so I thought that wouldn't make sense but now that you mention what you just did it makes more sense to me now." He said,"Yeah well, that's the story. And yeah, your welcome here. Um, his cousins in the other room if you wanna go talk." I go to the other room and his cousin invites me to stay on the bed with him so I do. We start talking about things,..life and interests again. Then I wake up and it's morning and I'm in the same house laying next to my friends cousin. I get up and feel like there's somebody standing there watching me. I look over and it's my friend. He asks me how my sleep was with his cousin. I tell him it was nice, he's really nice. We talked all night and all day and he tells me, "I'm glad you had a nice night. You know your always welcome to stay here and like I said, it is your house. I said, "ok, yeah I just decided to come because I didn't want to go all the way home." He said, "You could come for whatever reason it doesn't matter." Then a girl comes up to us, she was staring down at his cousin and I on the bed, looks at my friends cousin and says,"Oh so you have a girl over now and your not going to tell me?" He laughs and says"oh, she's just a friend and oh we talked all night about a lot of things, and I gotta show you something." I realize this girl is his cousins sister. He comes back with something in his hand, it's a magazine, hands it over and says, "check this out" it's a wedding magazine. He looks at me and says,"Your going to get married." I say, me no, I'm not going to get married." He says, "Yes you are" I say, "well I'm the master of my own decisions but however to just play around with your idea, I'm going to do something with the book." So I look over at his sister who's standing in front of us and say, "I'm going to flip to one of these pages and going to stick my finger and whatever I land on is going to be my dress." She says, "ok, go for it." So I do and I end up opening it, it turns out it landed on a wedding dress which is teal and the jewelry is aquamarine, it has a mermaid style look to it. I say, "look, I got a mermaid one" She says,"oh it looks like you are going to get married." I say "why is that?" She says "oh because the theme of the bathroom here in this house is a mermaid theme, it's the exact color pattern as that." I turn to my friend and say oh wow, did you hear that?" He said, "Yeah,... mermaid theme? I don't think that's a good one for you but it's interesting how those two connected." I said, "Yea, I don't want to get married though, so I don't know."

Your dream reads like a slow, nocturnal drama about safety, belonging, and the uneasy gift of intimacy. The shopping-center-that-looks-like-homes at the start places you in a liminal everyday place—doing ordinary errands—while an old friend who won’t leave you alone signals something from waking life that you’re trying to sidestep. The repeated following and staring carry the feeling of being pursued by an expectation, an unresolved closeness, or even a part of yourself that you prefer to avoid. Choosing to go with him despite your reluctance captures an ambivalence: you don’t want the encounter, yet you allow it to shape where you end up. The house that is suddenly “yours” is central and classic as a dream symbol: houses often represent the self and different rooms represent inner parts. That your friend arranges this transfer—putting the house in your name—reads like an unexpected inheritance of role or responsibility. Inside the house you encounter a man whose story about being bullied and losing a child to the friend’s father brings family lineage and shifting identities into focus. There’s a strong theme of lineage, substitution, and the way parental influence can rewrite someone’s life story. Your intuitive recognition of the connection between the man and your friend in the dream suggests you’re picking up on relational patterns (in your friend’s life or in your relationship with him) that feel like echoes of older family dynamics. The night and the abandoned feel of the place index vulnerability and a search for refuge. Lying on the grass outside to test whether anything will come out before going back in is a careful, embodied hesitation—an experiment about safety. Once inside, the cousin’s quiet friendliness and the easy, long conversation on the bed are soft counterpoints to the earlier tension: acceptance, listening, and uncomplicated human connection. That you wake up in the same place and feel watched by the friend suggests that even when you find comfort, the presence of that past connection or expectation remains—supportive and also surveillant. The wedding-magazine scene and the teal mermaid dress crystallize an emotional motif. The mermaid image draws us into water, the realm of feeling and of the anima in Jungian terms—the liminal feminine, seductive and mysterious, anchored to both sea and shore. Teal and aquamarine are watery, healing colors; their match with the house’s bathroom theme hints at a resonance between inner emotional life and external life-choices. The wedding motif raises the question of union—social, relational, or integrative—and your clear “I don’t want to get married” is an assertion of autonomy. The magazine roll of the dice (sticking a finger in to choose a dress) sets chance against choice: you are being asked—symbolically—to accept a role or relationship that perhaps you did not appoint for yourself. Taken together, the dream invites reflection on where you have been handed roles, how family stories shape the people close to you, and how you want to balance hospitality with boundaries. It tenderly points to a desire for belonging that doesn’t erase your autonomy: you can accept refuge and kind company without surrendering the decision to commit to a life path you don’t want. If you find it useful, notice where in your waking life you feel “followed” by expectations, and where you feel offered something that feels like a gift versus an obligation—those distinctions are exactly what this dream is playing with.
